Message from the Executive Director

Dear Families,
HAVE YOU SEEN OUR NEW WEBSITE? Last year, many of you shared on the family survey that you wanted more cohesive, aligned, and consistent communications and ways to find information about resources and school events. ParentSquare and our new website are part of responding to that ask! We heard you and our team has been hard at work reviewing your feedback and work with ParentSquare to design a site that reflects our values of connection- through sharing information easily and transparently and finding new ways to engage with you and the whole family.

The new site offers:
  • An updated and easy to navigate layout
  • Direct links to tools and information families use most
  • A consistent structure that will allow for growth over time
  • A welcoming landing spot and easy way to contact anyone in the school

We are proud of the refresh and hopeful it will make staying connected and informed with GRCDC even easier! Please take a look if you haven't already and bookmark for easy access. We will continue to revise and grow content, so I welcome your feedback and ideas!

In Partnership,
Lisa Nuyens
Executive Director

Food Resources For All

Many have reached out about the upcoming pause to SNAP (the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). If you are not familiar, it was announced last week that SNAP benefits will not be distributed to recipients in November. This sudden halt is expected to increase the risk of food insecurity for thousands of households across the state.

In response to the request for more information, we have collected the following resources for the members of our Narwhal community:

What is Happening? For a clear, visual explanation SNAP and how this program supports Michigan families, please see this infogram created by the Michigan League for Public Policy

Need Food Assistance Now? If you, or anyone you know, wants access to food assistance, we encourage the use of these resources:
  • Local Food Resources: We have compiled a list of local food pantries, free meal sites, and other programs that can provide support: Kent County Food Resources.
  • Quick Help: You can dial 2-1-1- or visit mi211.org at any time to connect confidentially with thousands of local health and human services resources.

Able to Provide Resources? For those who want to contribute to local resources, you may consider the following actions:
  • Donate Money: Local food banks can stretch financial resources much further by buying wholesale. Consider donating directly to Feeding America West Michigan
Donate Food/Items: Many of the resources listed above accept monetary and item donations. We encourage you to visit their websites and/or contact the organization to inquire about their current needs.

"10 Rules for Raising Kids in a High Tech World"

A group of parents will be gathering to discuss the book "10 Rules for Raising Kids in a High Tech World" by Dr. Jean Twenge. This is intended to be a supportive group to catch up on current research and explore the topic with other parents. We will be hosting an 2-part evening book group on Tues. 11/4 and Monday, November 17, 6:30-8pm. At the first gathering, we plan to discuss the first half of the book/five principles, and discuss the remainder at the second gathering. While we encourage you to read the book, we also welcome you to join if the topic interests you, whether you read the book or not! You can attend both or one of the dates.

Book description for '10 Rules for Raising Kids in a High-Tech World' by Jean M. Twenge.
We will provide childcare at the school for children ages 3 and older, by two GRCDC alumni.

The book can be purchased locally at Books and Mortar, and if you mention it is with GRCDC, they are able to provide a 10% discount on this title. They have a couple of copies in store, and if you need to order it through them, it takes a few business days. The Kindle version is also a more affordable way to access the book. If cost is a concern, please let us know if you would like one of a small number of copies the school will purchase.
